Behind the Door by A. Gavazzoni is a suspenseful erotic thriller and very different than any book that I have read. The story flips back and forth between the past and the present with many surprising twists and turns. I was guessing “who-done-it” up until the very end of the story, which does include some detailed BDSM practices. I was completely captivated and had a hard time putting it down!
Behind the Door tells the story of Carl, a defense attorney, who requests the services of a psychiatrist, Simone, who specializes in sexual behaviors. Carl asks Simone to give her professional opinion of a client of his who is going on trial for possible murder. The client was dating a woman, Lara, who passed away during the sexual practice of autoerotic asphyxiation. Carl provided Simone with a manuscript written by the client detailing the events leading up to her death.

As Simone tries to deal with the contents of Lara’s haunting diaries, one of her patients gets himself into a bit of legal trouble, forcing Simone to return early from her vacation. Although she’s happy to be back on her home turf, she finds herself surrounded by a whole new set of problems.
A killer is out there, and this time, he seems to be after the people Simone cares about most. Lara’s Journal is the second book in the Hidden Motives series and it’s a deliciously suspenseful novel. So you are aware, it’s essential to read Behind the Door, the first book in the series, to fully understand and appreciate this story. Lara’s Journal begins a month after Behind the Door with Simone on vacation. She is contacted by Carl stating that Lara’s siblings found her journal and they would like Simone to read them for her professional opinion.
This story flips back and forth between Simone, in the present time, and Lara’s experiences as told from her diary. Even though it does switch often, Ms. Gavazzoni does a wonderful job of not making it confusing. I enjoyed reading from Lara’s perspective, and like the first book, this was a thrilling page-turner!
The storyline is well paced and the characters are complex and well-developed. I was guessing ‘who-done-it’ until the very last pages. There is so many twists and turns that I was gripping my Kindle late into the night.
A definite one-click series for those who love an erotic thriller with lots of twists!
